Radon Information

Radon is a natural, odorless occurring gas found in the earth’s ground. Over time, it escapes through fissures and cracks in the ground and finds its way into your home. It can also make its way into the drinking water system of the home. Radon will eventually dissipate over time, but when it becomes trapped in our homes, it can become harmful to our health. It is recommended that you test your home yearly, because of changes in living and ground conditions.

For example, if you are planning to finish off your basement, it is recommended to test it before and after, in order to determine the picocuries (pCi/L) levels. According to the EPA anything over 4 pCi/L is highly recommended to have remediated by a professional. The EPA recommends testing on the lowest living level of the home. This is usually where people spend the most time.

JDH Inspections LLC will test under closed conditions. This means that if the home has no existing mitigation system, the home will need to be closed for at least 12 hours prior to testing. You are able to open and close doors under normal living conditions. The air conditioning and furnace can be operated as well. With any mitigation system it is recommended to have the system running for at least 24 hours prior to testing, and maintain operation during testing. Tests are conducted under strict requirements, which requires owners to have complete understanding that testing materials are not to be tampered with. This may increase or decrease the results and void the tests, which will cost you more money in the long run. It is best to follow the requirements and allow the test to run its normal course.
