Fire Extinguisher ABC’s

Fires can only start if three main elements are present; a fuel source, oxygen and heat.   When these three elements are present a fire can then ignite, and can quickly become a problem for your business.  Fire extinguishers are a great tool to help prevent fires from devastating and injuring your business and employees.  Having the appropriate fire extinguisher can mean the difference of extinguishing the fire or not.  Do you know which fire extinguisher is needed in your business?  JDH Inspections is here to assist you in making the right decision.

Fires are classified into specific “types” based on their fuel source.

The most common fire extinguisher is the ABC and serves as a great “all purpose” fire extinguisher.  The ABC fire extinguisher uses mono-ammonium phosphate and ammonium sulphate which acts like a blood hound tracking a coon when introduced onto a heat source. It works by smothering the fire until it is suppressed.

The ABC fire extinguisher is a great all purpose fire extinguisher in most circumstances.  One disadvantage is that when it is used near specialized equipment the powder may damage the equipment, and the powder can be difficult to clean up.

If your business has any other type of fire extinguisher it may be protecting a special hazard.  For example, in a kitchen cooking area there should be a silver K-Class extinguisher hanging on the wall. The agent within the extinguisher is specialized potassium acetate based; low PH liquid designed specifically to coat cooking oil fires and suppresses potentially disastrous kitchen grease fires.

There are several other types of specialized fire extinguishers, including D-Class fire extinguishers, clean agent fire extinguishers, water fire extinguishers and more. These each have a specialized application to help protect a certain item or area.  Please call JDH Inspections LLC for more information.

Knowing the right fire extinguisher to use at the right time could save your business and even your life, so make sure to educate yourself about the proper application and operation of fire extinguishers.
